1st Garden

"Dans un jardin luxuriant, sauvage et foisonnant, les plantes sont colorées, étranges et inconnues. Elles forment des bosquets, des massifs et des buissons qui s’entremêlent et s’amoncellent dans un désordre élégant. De l’eau fraîche ruisselle parmi la végétation. De petites boules blanches cotonneuses flottent autour des plantes. À l’exception d’un vrombissement discret, le jardin est paisible et serein."​​​ **

** " In a lush, wild, and abundant garden, the plants are colorful, strange, and unfamiliar. they form thickets, clumps, and bushes that intermingle and pile up in an elegant disorder. Fresh water trickles between the vegetation. Small, cottony white balls float around the plants. Except for a discreet buzz, the garden is peaceful and serene."

For the fist part of the film, we wanted a very slow and contemplative pace. Let the mold be the center of our gaze and let Shim (our gardener) be our guide who introduces us to his creations.

We begin with macro close-ups, then move towards increasingly wider shots that gradually reveal the garden.

We give the viewer time to contemplate the setting.

1er jardin

Chaos

"Un massif se détache et s’envole dans un craquement, les racines délicates se déchirent. Des bosquets entiers s’arrachent dans un fracas assourdissant. La stupeur cloue le jardinier sur place. Des jardins s’écroulent, des plantes volent autour de lui. Les mains tremblantes, il regarde le chaos se dérouler sous ses yeux." **

** " A clump breaks away and flies away with a crack, delicate roots tearing apart. Entire groves are torn up with a deafening crash. The gardener is stunned. Graden collapse, plants fly around him. With trembling hands, he watches the chaos unfold before his eyes. "

For the chaos sequence, research turned to videos of natural disasters : hurricanes, earthquakes and tsunamis to get a sense of the atmosphere of a world where everything is being torn apart. Shim struggles with the violence of the setting for his creations but he is too small ; everything is swept away.

Empty space & rebuilt jungle

"Le paysage est blanc, pur, aseptisé. Seul le vrombissement constant subsiste. Le jardinier ramasse son couvre-chef et le remet sur sa tête, démuni."..."Déterminé, il se remet au travail sans son bâton, perdu pendant le chaos." **

** " The landscape is white, pure, sanitized. Only the constant buzzing remains. The gardener picks up his hat and places it back on his head, helpless. " "Determined, he goes back to work without his stick, lost during the chaos. "

At the beginning of the void sequence, it was necessary to show that he had lost everything, that his garden was gone. Determination brings him back to himself when a spore comes down to him and he gives his everything to rebuild his garden. A touch of anger is present at the beginning of the reconstruction, and then calms down when the jungle appears and his artistic side from the beginning of the story returns.

Landfill 

"La lumière du jour inonde les jardins. Son monde s’ouvre en deux. Le jardinier avance vers l’ouverture, traverse ses jardins, au milieu des clayettes immenses qui portent ses cultures, jusqu’à  atteindre le bord de l’étage en plastique." **

** " Daylight floods the gardens. His world opens in two. The gardener advances towards the opening, crosses his gardens, among the immense shelves that hold his crops, until he reaches the edge of the plastic shelf. "

For the finale, we wanted the character and the viewer to be confused. Shim is surprised to see a new environment, a new light, a new world. and for the viewer, this intriguing ending makes them want to watch the film again in order to intercept the hidden clues.
